Riddle me this? How do two doctors send a diabetic home with steriods for an undisclosed condtion? And never did they mention and changes I might need to be aware of, being a diabetic. Not to menation, the fact that they couldn’t figure out or even consider psorisis now that I have learned more about it, it’s pretty common. I’m not a doctor and I wasn’t aware of this disease. What I have become aware of, is if you catch it early you can take steps to minimize the breakout hence pain. I’m considering taking further action.

Tell your veterinarian what medications your pet is currently using and any new products, including herbal remedies you may start to give. Drug/drug interactions could cause a decrease in effectiveness or an increase in side effects of either Atopica or the other medication being given. Examples of medications that may cause drug/drug interactions are: SMZ-TMP (Bactrim, Septra), gentamicin, etodolac (EtoGesic), piroxicam (Feldene), ketoconazole (Nizoral), cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), itraconazole (Sporanox), methylprednisolone (Medrol), erythromycin, Allopurinol (Zyloprim), metoclopramide (Reglan), prednisolone, digoxin (Lanoxin), or any type of vaccination.

Treatment: systemic steroids probably should be used in patients with severe cases; cold compresses and antihistamines helpful; Lidex (fluocinonide) gel soothing and cooling and helps evaporation on wet eczematous rash; clobetasol too strong; prednisone tablets for severe cases (60 mg every morning for 5 days, followed by 30 mg every morning for five days, followed by 20 mg every morning for 5 days); by time patients present, they probably have had rash for 1 wk, so only need to cover for 2 wk; injection of Kenalog (triamcinolone; 60 mg) will start drying rash within 1 day; prednisone gives some patients difficult side effects

There is no scientifically proven limit for cortisone injections, however as a general rule, three injections into the same body part are permitted over a twelve month period. Injections more frequent than this are felt to place the injected tissue at risk of softening/weakening, which may be an issue in a joint for example, as this may accelerate arthritis. Also, if you have failed to respond to a series of three injections, then it is probably time your condition was reassessed to find out if the diagnosis correct. Has your condition worsened and are other forms of treatment, such as surgery, more appropriate?

The adverse effects of corticosteroids in pediatric patients are similar to those in adults (see ADVERSE REACTIONS ). Like adults, pediatric patients should be carefully observed with frequent measurements of blood pressure, weight, height, intraocular pressure, and clinical evaluation for the presence of infection, psychosocial disturbances, thromboembolism, peptic ulcers, cataracts, and osteoporosis. Pediatric patients who are treated with corticosteroids by any route, including systemically administered corticosteroids, may experience a decrease in their growth velocity. This negative impact of corticosteroids on growth has been observed at low systemic doses and in the absence of laboratory evidence of HPA axis suppression (., cosyntropen stimulation and basal cortisol plasma levels). Growth velocity may therefore be a more sensitive indicator of systemic corticosteroid exposure in pediatric patients treated with corticosteroids should be monitored, and the potential growth effects of prolonged treatment should be weighed against clinical benefits obtained and the availability of treatment alternatives. In order to minimize the potential growth effects of corticosteroids, pediatric patients should be titrated to the lowest effective dose.
